Members of The University of Alabama Sigma Chi fraternity, in conjunction with UA sororities, recently presented a $32,000 check to Children’s Hospital of Alabama.

The groups generated the proceeds through Derby Days, according to UA student John Lovett, who chaired the event. In the week-long Derby Days, organized by Sigma Chi, UA sororities compete in a variety of contests including volleyball, karaoke, photography and many others. The students raise money by selling sponsorship ads for the event to local businesses.

“I am so proud to have been a part of this milestone donation of $32,000 to such an incredible organization,” said Lovett. “Helping our community and those in need is at the heart of all Greek organizations, and we at Sigma Chi at The University of Alabama are extremely pleased to be able to make this significant contribution to help provide medical care to Alabama’s children.”

In 2008, the event raised $23,000 for charity. These two donations were both the largest reported philanthropic contributions of any UA fraternities or sororities during each of the last two years, respectively, said Gentry McCreary, director of Greek Affairs at UA.

Children’s Hospital of Alabama is the 10th busiest pediatric medical center in the country. It ranks among the best employers to work for in the region. It is affiliated with the University of Alabama at Birmingham but is not part of UAB.

The University of Alabama, a student-centered research university, is in the midst of a planned, steady enrollment growth with a goal of reaching 28,000 students by 2010. This growth, which is positively impacting the campus and the state's economy, is in keeping with UA's vision to be the university of choice for the best and brightest students. UA, the state's flagship university, is an academic community united in its commitment to enhancing the quality of life for all Alabamians.
